THE STORY

The Birmingham Slow Ride began in 2019 as a weekend challenge among a group of friends. The idea was to see if we could ride 150 miles in two days and camp out in between. Two mountain bikers, a seasoned runner and a guy working with enthusiasm alone accomplished their goal. We had such a good time that we did it again in 2020 and increased the mileage to 200! We expanded the group and also also raised money for an amazing local charity, the WISE School. Why WISE you ask? WISE is a local 501c3 dedicated to helping children who are born deaf learn how to integrate into a hearing society. One of our co-founders has a daughter who was born deaf. After receiving cochlear implants, WISE played a critical role in her learning to function in a hearing world. The work they do in the Birmingham community is incredible. This year the Slow Ride returns with back to back centuries and another opportunity to provide much needed funding to fantastic organization.

The Woolley Institute for Spoken-Language Education (WISE) is dedicated to educating, supporting and empowering parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Our comprehensive therapy and educational programs are designed to provide opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing children to learn to listen, speak, read, and integrate fully into the hearing society.

Every dollar from registration and product sales will go directly to WISE. Our corporate sponsor, Fluid Solutions, has committed to cover all expenses associated with the event.

Check out WISE’s website to learn more about the great things they are doing in the state of Alabama.
